How to Support a Grieving Widow/Widower

ö Allow the widow to cry.

ö Allow the widow to tell his or her story.

ö Allow the widow to make his/her own decisions; in his/her own time.

ö Don’t make assumptions about the widow’s financial status.  Gently ask questions to determine what type of assistance he or she may or may not need.

ö Check in periodically by phone, email or better yet in-person.

ö Be proactive and assist with everyday tasks including meals, buying groceries, help with picking up their children from school and activities; and assist with everyday errands.

ö Don’t abandon them.
